I'm Going Through Something (MFA Thesis)

I'm Going Through Something (AN MFA Thesis)

(EXPERIENCE DESIGN)

“I’m going through something” explores…

the state of “Liminalty.” It is the ambiguity or disorientation one experiences during a life-changing event. My graduate thesis focuses on expressing Liminality through graphic design.

The project consisted of two installations: the exhibit and the stairwell installation. The exhibit acted as a trailer for the larger stairwell installation.

Firstly, the exhibit guides visitors through the journey of Liminality. The walls display a narrative, with the central booth acting as the main event.

Based off the work of anthropologists Arnold van Gennep and Victor Turner, the project was broken into these three sections.

At the end of the thesis exhibit, viewers are encouraged to follow directions to a secret stairwell installation.

THE Liminal STairwell

Following the directions on the card, visitors found themselves at this nondescript utility door on the 4th floor. The experience came with a soundtrack available to scan and listen to while you traverse the stairwell.

Upon returning back to the exhibition space,
participants were given these riso prints.
